Leone "Whites"  Retain 2016 Shield

Rugby News

4 July 2015:  It was exciting enough the first week of the ASRU Annual 15s Championships that Pago Eagle took the shield from Lalomalava, the excitement in the second week found Leone Whites coming very close to taking it away from Pago.  In the end, though, Pago Eagle retained the Shield, and will do so for the next two weeks as Pago drew the bye for July 11ths competition.

Tempers red hot and hands were flying, referee Faatausau dished out red cards to each side players in the first 10 minutes of play, and both teams played with 14 players for the rest of the contest.  All was calm after the red cards.

Final score:

Leone 15 - 15 Pago

In a somewhat unusual fashion, the 15s tournament for 2013 has ended before all the teams have had a chance to challenge Fagatogo for the Shield. Fagatogo Blues has never lost a Shield challenge prior to that abrupt finish. The tournament was to end before the start of the High Schools football league.  However, due to bad weather and necessary postponements, ASRU was not able to bring the 2013 Fifteens to its normal close.  The member clubs on 15 October 2013 agreed, in recognition of the difficulties with the Veterans Memorial Stadium (VMS) availability, agreed that it would be too cumbersome to continue the tournament later in the year, after the completion of the High Schools football season.  Member clubs then agreed that the three teams that did not have the chance at a Shield challenge this year will be the first to challenge the Fagatogo Blues for the Shield in 2014.  "The President and I, and the Board of Directors, appreciate your understanding and look foreward to a better and exciting competition in the new year.  We wish you all the very best and we will continue with our Rugby 7s tournaments for the 2013 season", stated the Chairman of the Board in his final comments.

08 October 2013:

1.  In its general monthly meeting on Monday, 08 October 2013, the announcement was made for the "Mosooi 7s" tournament scheduled to kick-off October 25 and 26.

2.  Along with the "Mosooi 7s", ASRU will also be hosting the Apia Rugby Union (ARU) in a variety of Rugby matches during the ARU tour of American Samoa.  It is anticipated that the Talavalu will select its first 15s National side to play at least one match with the ARU mens 15s, along with Rugby 7s matches for both men and women.
